Typhoid Fever

Many Africans get typhoid fever from bacteria in contaminated food and water. This bacteria (called Salmonella) can last for weeks in the water of dried sewage. The symptoms of typhoid fever include: poor appetites, diarrhea, headaches, and pains. People with typhoid fever sometimes have fevers as high as 103° F – 104° F (39° C – 40° C). Regularly, typhoid fever causes death from massive infection, profuse bleeding in the intestines, and pneumonia. But with the help of antibiotics, about 18% less people die from this disease. Typhoid fever is spread by insects that feed on feces and transfer the bacteria to your body. The cause of typhoid fever is poor sanitation and poor hygiene.

Cholera Epidemic

Many of the children in Haiti have the cholera epidemic, a disease that has taken over 135 lives and infected over 1,500 people. Cholera infects the intestines and causes severe dehydration. Cholera is most likely spread in places with poor water treatment, sanitation, and hygiene. A person can get cholera by eating food or drinking water contaminated with the cholera bacterium. Some symptoms of cholera is profuse diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps. Without fluid replacement, death can occur very rapidly.
